Southern Rivers Energy believes in investing in youth.
Each year, the co-op sponsors two high school students on the Washington Youth Tour in addition to sponsoring youth electrification career development events in partnership with high school FFA advisors through Agriculture CTAE pathways. SRE also partners with area schools to help local students realize their dreams of post-secondary education through two unique scholarship programs.

Statement on AI Usage for Scholarship Applications
At Southern Rivers Energy, we recognize that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Bard, and others can be valuable resources. These tools can help generate ideas and refine your thoughts, but the final submission should reflect your own work. As with any other resource, you should avoid directly copying content that you did not create.
This local scholarship opportunity is sponsored by Southern Rivers Energy and the Southern Rivers Energy Trust, Inc., thanks to members who give to Operation Round-Up. Applicants will be judged blindly by a panel of educators on the quality of their essays, along with grade-point average and community and school involvement. Five scholarships worth $3,000 each will be awarded in 2025. All applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by March 1, 2025. Applications may be delivered to Southern Rivers Energy or mailed to: Southern Rivers Energy Trust Scholarship, P.O. Box 40, Barnesville, GA 30204.
Criteria:
Student's primary residence is within one of the following counties served by SRE: Bibb, Coweta (restricted to 30229), Crawford, Lamar, Pike, Meriwether, Monroe, Spalding and Upson. Student is a high school senior (public, private or home-school) or is currently enrolled in an accredited college or technical school. Not intended for graduate school.
What to submit:
ONE essay that addresses all four of the core values Touchstone Energy Cooperatives such as Southern Rivers Energy adhere to: Commitment to Community, Accountability, Innovation and Integrity. The essay should be 1,000 words or less, typed and double-spaced. Do NOT reveal your name, place of residence, school, etc. In the answers, as such references will disqualify your application.

- School Photo or headshot from shoulders up with a solid background.

Five scholarships will be disbursed to the business office of the university or college in the amount of $3,000.
The Walter Harrison Scholarship program is a statewide scholarship competition sponsored by the EMCs in Georgia. Seventeen $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2025 to be applied toward educational costs at any accredited two- or four-year university, college, or vocational-technical institute within Georgia.
Criteria:
- Reside in the household of a SRE member or SRE employee
- Be accepted or enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program
- Complete a two-page application
- Write a two-page autobiographical sketch referencing future plans/goals
The Walter Harrison Scholarship is awarded to students who excel in GPA, SAT scores, academic standing, and scholastic honors, and who demonstrate a financial need. A scholarship committee will review entries made up of EMC directors and managers from across Georgia.
All applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by Feb. 1, 2025. Students must apply through the EMC that provides service to their home.
