Green power is environmentally-friendly electricity generated from renewable resources, such as solar, wind, biomass (which uses landfill gas and agricultural waste), and water.
In 2001, Southern Rivers Energy partnered with other EMC's in Georgia to form Green Power EMC in an effort to search for viable renewable energy sources and offer members the opportunity to purchase clean energy. It became operational in 2003 and now 38 EMC's in the state participate in the program.
It was the first renewable energy program in Georgia and provides Southern Rivers Energy members the opportunity to support cleaner, renewable energy created from resources here in Georgia where we live, work, and play.
Green Power EMC's renewable energy portfolio is capable of producing 635 Mega-Watts of clean energy and currently operates five landfill gas-to-electricity facilities, a low-impact hydro facility, one wood waste biomass plant, and our Green Power EMC Energy Education program while coordinating more than 31 solar projects across the state while monitoring three wind power projects.
