Once a year, two local high school students are selected by Southern Rivers Energy to represent our cooperative and state as delegates on the Washington Youth Tour. This top-notch leadership experience and tour of Washington, D.C., includes meetings with state and national leaders and leadership training, as well as visits to all the major sights. Participants join over 1,400 other students from around the nation—all expenses paid—for one incredible week in our nation’s capital.
All students who apply will receive a study guide several weeks before the contest for the written test portion of the competition. The test is comprised of 50 multiple choice, True-False, fill in the blank and essay questions covering topics such as the history of rural electrification, Southern Rivers Energy, the basics of how electricity works, electrical safety, and the cooperative business model. The highest scoring individuals on the written test go on to participate in an interview where the winners are then chosen based on poise, leadership qualities, school activities, community service and knowledge of material. Students must score an 80 or above to move on to participate in the interview portion.
