Nearly 600 Attend Southern Rivers Energy’s 80th Annual Meeting
Barnesville, GA – Southern Rivers Energy held its Annual Meeting, Saturday, Aug. 26 with approximately 441 members present and represented by proxy. In addition to the business meeting, around 590 attendees enjoyed breakfast, an extensive health fair provided by Upson Regional Medical Center and visited information booths on energy efficiency, Operation Round Up®, and SRE’s Member Advisory Committee. A total of 25 members signed up to round their electric bill to the nearest dollar each month in support of Operation Round Up® — a charitable program that funds community, safety and education grants throughout the cooperative’s service territory.
President/CEO Michael McMillan reported that Southern Rivers Energy remains fiscally sound with assets totaling more than 82 million dollars as of December 2016 and has refunded a total of $18.2 million in capital credits to SRE members to date. In 2016, they paid over $842,000 in property and sales taxes across nine counties and collected over $2.7 million in sales tax.
In addition to financial reports, Mr. McMillan touched on the significant system improvements the cooperative has made over the past year to strengthen reliability and prepare for growth. He also announced Southern Rivers Energy’s recent agreement to purchase 2 Megawatts (MW) of solar power from four new solar generating facilities planned across different locations in southern Georgia that will bring an additional 200 MW of solar generating power to the state. The projects are slated to come online by 2020 and the total output will provide enough low-cost, renewable power to help serve more than 35,000 EMC households annually. SRE’s portion will provide enough power to serve 350 homes annually.
The members voted to re-elect the following board members to a three-year term: Stephen Goodman of Concord, Ralph Nix of Macon and Brian Ogletree of Milner.
Registered members received some fantastic door prizes and Vera Jackson of Concord, Ga. was the lucky $500 cash grand prize winner. Ten members won a $50 credit on their next power bill and 10 large ferns were also given away. Ms. Barbara Minter of Barnesville was the winner of a 43-inch flat screen TV in a special drawing held for Operation Round Up® participants. Many attendees took advantage of the extensive health fair provided by Upson Regional Medical Center.
