SRE Discontinues Surge Protection Program
Starting Jan. 1, 2016, Southern Rivers Energy began phasing out the Tesco Surge Protection program. Each protector has a 10-year warranty (from the manufacture date) so beginning Jan. 1, 2016, we began removing the protectors whose warranties were expiring. The surge protectors that were already installed with several years still left on their warranty were left in place to continue providing surge protection, but we have not installed any new ones since Jan. 1, 2016.
These meter base suppressors/surge protectors are designed to protect equipment (appliances, electronics, etc.) from lightning strikes that travel through the power line. If the manufacturer, Tesco, determines that a lightning strike did in fact enter a home through the power line, they would provide a replacement warranty for both the protector and damage to down line equipment listed on the Tesco Warranty Covered Items list you received when signing up for this service.
However, most lightning strikes enter a home through the ground, piping and telephone lines and never pass through the meter to give the protector an opportunity to suppress the strike. The meter base protector is still protecting equipment in the event that a strike comes through the power line but will not cover damage to equipment from strikes entering any other way.
Because of the complexity of the third party warranty offered by Tesco and the limited coverage offered by the surge protectors, SRE will stop charging the monthly $5.95 fee for the remaining surge protectors July 31, 2017. The remaining surge protectors still covered by the warranty will remain on the meters to continue providing the protection for which they are designed and will be removed as the expiration date approaches.
